Noir is the New Black
|
Move over the light and riotous colours of the summer, the cold weather is here and with it is the return of the black. Gone are the floaty airey fairy shapes of the last season, making way for the dramatic dark tailored looks of autumn and winter.
Our old favourite returns in a range of brilliantly wearable options: Victorian shapes are key, and have a darkly beguiling edge. Velvet, embellishment, embroidery and fur trim add to the look. From voluminous blouses to cigarette pants and sultry film noir-style dresses, this looks is grown up, sexy and very flattering.
For coats opt for structure with a princess-cut, ankle-length or single-breasted style, or keep it soft and simple with an effortless wrap. Length of the arms on coats this season are three quarter length - doesn't sound the most practical length for minus temperatures, but when worn with long leather gloves you should be toasty as a bug in the proverbial.
If black is a little too harsh for you, there will be colour involved but through the medium of garment layering, a hint of colour peeking out from under a jumper or scarf is the way forward. Or if layering scares you, try involving colour through the abundance of tweeds, checks and marls which will be dominating many themes.
Grey is also making a HUGE come back in all different hues ranging from metallic tones of light steel through to charcoal. For a more feminine feel, go for brown, which continues as an autumn staple, and we see peacock tones in velvet and laden greens in tweed, damson, plum, and deep purple tones.
To soften the dark look of winter fashion, lace in all forms takes center stage, kept simple and modern in white, ivory, and blush. The most notable fashion houses flirting with lace dresses are Michael Kors, Anna Sui, and Derek Lam.
But if that is a little too girly for you, never fear as the geek theme ala 'Hoxton Square' continues strong into the new year, ties, shirts, and cardigans that your mum would have bought you years ago are teamed with skinny jeans and fifties hair. This look is less schoolmarm, and more forties, fifties Andrew sister with a sexy twist, but keep the geek factor apparent. You don't want to look like the boss' bit of fluff on the side.
